Everything, really. But the original fireplaces with all their grandeur deserve honourable mention.
It’s been nearly 8 years since the last beer was poured but after a night at the newly re-opened Guildford Hotel there’s no doubt patrons old and new will be flocking to the place to see how lovingly, triumphantly and respectfully she’s been restored.
Every nook and cranny tells a different story, from the historic balconies to the vaudevillian function room. From the wall made of reclaimed doors to the fireplaces half way up the walls, this is a venue with tone of intrigue and tall tales to tell. The saying ‘if only the walls could talk’ couldn’t be more relevant in these rooms .
There’s new energy running through the joint but the awe inspiring decor pays authentic homage to its history. Glancing up at the beams you can’t help notice the charring that remains - a nostalgic and poignant reminder of the building’s past.
Hats off to the architect who not only repaired the place but re-established it as a top notch watering hole thanks to the new and impressive retractable roof. Whilst structurally sound without it, this guy understands that the locals seek al fresco in summer and cosy warmth in winter and has given the people the very best of both. We’ll never get tired of the night sky views so excuse us whilst we mould into the furniture.
The food menu is refreshingly casual, a hearty mix of comfort food and trusty old favourites - think bao buns, burgers and battered fish and chips - and the drinks menu is an impressive display of local wines. There’s even a port or two to warm you in winter as you settle in front of their fire for the night. Scrabble, anyone?
With its history back intact and a bright looking future, we don’t wanna give too much more away. Trust us when we say that this is a venue worth (re)discovering and the memories you’ll make here are sure to be fond ones.
